Shubman Gill Ruled Out, IND vs SA 2nd Test: Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the second Test between India and South Africa, which is scheduled to be played at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati from November 22 to 26. Rishabh Pant is all set to captain India as the hosts aim to level the two-match series after losing the opening game.
Gill, who suffered a neck spasm during India’s defeat in Kolkata, was later admitted to a private hospital and kept under observation. After getting discharged, the 26-year-old batter joined the team and flew to Guwahati with doubt looming over his participation. He played no part in India's outdoor net session on Thursday, and the final decision was announced by the BCCI on Friday.

Unfortunately, he was not fully fit to feature in the 2nd Test and will head to Mumbai for further assessment of his injury," the statement added.
India will be heading into the second match on the back of heavy criticism they faced after displaying a horrible effort with the bat, and the talks over the possible combination. All eyes will be on India's batting order in the absence of Gill. "We will announce the team combination tomorrow. We have already sort of decided and spoken to the player," Pant told reporters on Friday regarding Gill’s replacement in the playing XI.
"I think he is getting better. He was very keen on playing this Test. I got to know yesterday that I will be the captain," revealed the wicketkeeper-batter, who will be India’s 38th Test captain.
The decision to keep Gill out was taken to avoid the risk of further neck spasms if he plays so soon after recovering. He has been advised to get more rest. The young batter remains doubtful as of now for selection in the ODI squad for the three matches against South Africa starting on November 30. The squad for that series is expected to be picked on November 23.
With Gill out and no replacements named, India have to choose one of B Sai Sudharsan, Devdutt Padikkal and Nitish Kumar Reddy as his replacement. Notably, Gill had missed a Test against New Zealand in October 2024 due to a neck spasm, too.
Talking about the previous game, India were bowled out for 93 runs while chasing the 124-run target on a challenging pitch, losing the game by 30 runs.
