Angelo Mathews Timed Out, SL vs BAN World Cup 2023: Angelo Mathews, the Sri Lankan all-rounder had his name etched in the history books unwantedly as he became a victim of a bizarre dismissal and the first ever batter to be 'timed out.
An unusual instance took place in match 38 of the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka when Mathees was dismissed for not being able to ready to face the ball as the newly arrived batter in the stipulated timeline of 2 minutes.
However, Mathews who felt to had unfairly given out in an act that was against the spirit of the game expressed his frustration over his unique dismissal.

The veteran put his version on the same and shared the proof while countering the fourth umpire's explanation that he had arrived at the crease within the stipulated timeline of 2 minutes.
Notably, Mathews was adjudged out after the Bangladesh team appealed that he had failed to arrive within two minutes post the dismissal of Sadeera Samarawickrama in the 25th over of the first innings.
Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan confirmed the appeal and umpires decided to give Mathews out after a long and frustrating round of chats and arguments between the parties involved.
Sri Lanka went on to lose the match by three wickets but Mathews stated that they would be putting out the evidence of the controversial scenario to clarify that he had taken the crease within the time.
4th umpire is wrong here! Video evidence shows I still had 5 more seconds even after the helmet gave away! Can the 4th umpire rectify this please? I mean safety is paramount as I just couldn’t face the bowler without a helmet

Sharing the video proof, Mathews wrote on X (formerly Twitter): "4th umpire is wrong here! Video evidence shows I still had 5 more seconds even after the helmet gave away! Can the 4th umpire rectify this, please? I mean safety is paramount as I just couldn't face the bowler without a helmet."
Mathews replied on the point highlighted by former Sri Lanka cricketer Russel Arnold which suggested that the batter should be ready to face the delivery in 2 minutes.
Yes was ready before that 2 mins! Can’t face the bowler without the helmet no?

"Yes was ready before that 2 mins! Can’t face the bowler without the helmet no?" Mathews responded.
The official broadcaster had shown a video claiming that Mathews had reached the crease inside the 2-minute timeline.
However, the fourth umpire had a different point of view about the incident as he boldly said that Mathews had exhausted the 2-minute timeline even before the helmet issue took place.

But Mathews, who played in front foot was quick to put his version in front of everyone as he rubbished the fourth umpire's explanation, and as per him that wasn't the case at all.
"Obviously, you all play to win. And if it's within the rule, it's fine. But the rule clearly says, in my incident today, within two minutes I was there. We have video evidence. We will put out a statement later on. We have video evidence, footage, everything was looked. I'm not just coming and saying things here. I'm talking with proof," Mathews said in the post-match press conference.
"So, we have the video evidence where from the time the catch was taken, and then from the time I walked into the crease, I still had five seconds after breaking my helmet. So, we talk about the safety of the players - you guys tell me if It's right for me to take my guard without my helmet on? It's just pure common sense," he added.
