Veteran batter Angelo Mathews achieved a remarkable milestone on Friday, December 6, as he cemented his place alongside two Sri Lankan cricket legends Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene in the annals of Sri Lankan cricket history.
Mathews achieved this feat on the second day of the ongoing second Test match held between Sri Lanka and South Africa at St George's Park in Gqeberha.
The batter was unbeaten on 40 runs from 71 balls at the day's end when he crossed 34 runs to engrave his name on the big pages of record books as one of the most accomplished Sri Lankan batters in Test cricket history.

The left-handed batter shot up and has accumulated 8006 runs in 205 innings in 116 Tests over a 14-year career, and at 37 years old, he stands with a great blend of millions of records in his name as one of the greatest Sri Lankan cricketers. Mathew's Test cricketing saga started against Pakistan at Galle in July 2009.
In addition to his phenomenal Test cricket record, Mathews has contributed a great deal to the Sri Lankan limited-overs unit of the game. For the last fifteen years, Mathews has been a significant part of the One-Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 International (T20I) teams. In the 226 ODIs played by him, he has scored 5916 runs, and in 90 T20Is, he has 1416 runs with three centuries and 40 half-centuries.
Meanwhile, talking about the second Test match between Sri Lanka and South Africa, the visitors were in a comfortable position thanks mainly to a solid 89-run innings from Pathum Nissanka.
When the day ended, the visitors were still trailing South Africa's first innings total by 116 runs with seven wickets still in hand. Dinesh Chandimal made a highly sought-after knock of 44 runs off 97 deliveries with five boundaries, finally succumbing to Dane Paterson. Angelo Mathews, meanwhile, managed to stay unbeaten on 40 runs, which had come off 71 balls and had six of the most elegant fours.
