Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has backed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to resume the Indian Premier League (IPL) action as originally planned sooner rather than later, outlining how the board managed to get a window out during the COVID-19 break in 2021.
Amidst the escalating tension between India and Pakistan, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Friday that the 18th edition of the cash-rich league has been suspended for a week, citing that the information regarding the new schedule will be announced in due course after discussion with the government.
Since the cancellation of Thurday's IPL game between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala midway after air raid alerts in neighbouring cities of Jammu and Pathankot, the cloud of uncertainty has been looming over the future of IPL's resumption.
"There is a war-like situation in the country, and the BCCI had to do this as there are so many Indian and foreign players. Let's hope the IPL restarts soon, as an important stage of the tournament is around the corner," Sourav Ganguly told ANI.
"BCCI had to do this, especially in Dharamshala, Chandigarh, Delhi, Rajasthan, and Jaipur. These are all venues of the IPL. It is necessary to do this according to the situation that happened last night. With time, it will get better and matches will also be played. BCCI will complete the IPL, and this situation will end very soon as Pakistan will not be able to handle the pressure for a long time," he added.

The former India captain Ganguly remained steadfast in his belief that the BCCI would yield enough power to complete the 18th edition even with a week’s delay.
“A situation like COVID-19 just cannot happen again. Matches were played during Covid-19 and the instructions given by the Indian government, BCCI worked according to that," Ganguly told India Today.
