IND vs ENG: Ex-India batter VVS Laxman is all set to guide the Indian men's senior team ahead of the series opener against England if the regular head coach Gautam Gambhir doesn't return to England on time as he is currently in India, taking care of his ill mother. India will lock horns with England for the first Test match at Headingley in Leeds from next week.

According to a media publication, Laxman, who is currently part of the NCA, is currently in London, for India's U19 series against England.

The India U19 team will lock horns with the England U19 team for a five-youth ODI match series, which will be held later this month, and a two-match youth Test series, which will be held in Beckenhem and Chelmsford next month.

And since Gambhir is not currently with the Men in Blue, Lazman, who also worked with a second-string Indian team for a T20I series against South Africa in 2024 and also was the head coach for a five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe last year, where Shubman Gill had led the Men in Blue from the front for the first time.

Gambhir returned to India on Friday

Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir had flown back to India last week, as his mother Seema Gambhir was rushed to a hospital owing to a health emergency, a BCCI source had revealed to PTI.

The source had revealed that Gambhir had returned to India to take care of his ailing mother, who had had a heart attack and was under observation at the ICU at a hospital in New Delhi.

The Shubman Gill-led side is currently in England for a five-match Test series against the hosts, which will begin next week in Leeds.

“Gautam’s mother had a heart attack on Wednesday. He and his family left for India on Thursday, and they have reached Delhi," the BCCI source concluded.

In his absence, team India's assistant coach Ryan Ten Doeschate has been guiding the sides in the four-day intra-squad match between India and India-A, which began last week.

He is getting help from the other members of the coaching staff like team India's bowling coach Morne Morkel and batting coach Sutanshu Kotak.
