Why India Didn't Collect Trophy: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to launch a strong protest against the Asian Cricket Council chief, Mohsin Naqvi, during the upcoming ICC meeting in November, after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) walk away with the Asia Cup trophy following India's refusal to accept the title from him in Dubai.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia upheld the team's decision, explaining that India couldn't take the trophy from someone "who happens to be one of the main leaders of Pakistan."
"We have decided not to take the Asia Cup 2025 trophy from the ACC chairman, who happens to be one of the main leaders of Pakistan," BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia told a select group of news agencies at the board headquarters in Mumbai, as quoted by PTI.
Saikia further demanded that Mohsin Naqvi promptly return the Asia Cup 2025 trophy and individual medals.
"But that does not mean that the gentleman will take away the trophy with him, along with the medals. So it is very unfortunate and we hope that the trophy and the medals will be returned to India as soon as possible," Saikia said.
The BCCI is set to escalate the matter to the International Cricket Council (ICC), with Secretary Saikia pledging to pursue action against Mohsin Naqvi.
"There is an ICC conference in November in Dubai. In the next conference, we are going to launch a very serious and very strong protest against the act of the ACC chairperson (Naqvi)," Saikia said.
Saikia emphasised that the judgment to decline the Asia Cup Trophy was planned, citing that India wouldn't receive the trophy from a representative of a nation perceived to be hostile towards it.
“It is not possible for us to accept an award from someone who represents a country waging war against India. This was not impulsive – it was a conscious and unanimous decision by the team," Saikia told CNN News18 during an exclusive chat.
“After the presentation, he walked away with the trophy and even the medals meant for our players. That is against sporting spirit and ACC protocol. We will lodge a strong protest with the ACC and at the ICC conference in November. Such behaviour cannot be allowed to set a precedent," he added.
