India head coach Gautam Gambhir made a rare appearance at an IPL match on Thursday as he was seen watching the Delhi Capitals vs Kolkata Knight Riders game at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

During the match, Gambhir was spotted sitting alongside India selector R.P. Singh. The two were seen having long discussions through different stages of the game. Gambhir was also seen talking to BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla in the stands.

This was the first time Gambhir attended an IPL match in person since his successful return to Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024. Back then, he worked as the team mentor and helped KKR win the title before later becoming India’s head coach.

Interestingly, the match taking place in Delhi made the moment even more special because Gambhir’s IPL journey originally began with the Delhi franchise when it was known as Delhi Daredevils. Although he became a legend at KKR by winning two IPL trophies as captain and another as mentor, he returned to Delhi for one final IPL season in 2018 before retiring from all forms of cricket later that year.

Why was Gambhir there during the DC vs KKR clash?

There has been no official statement explaining why Gambhir attended the match. However, many believe his visit may also have been linked to player scouting and selection discussions, especially with India’s busy international schedule coming up.

India still have several important series lined up across formats in the coming months. The team is scheduled to tour Sri Lanka and New Zealand for Test series later this year. Apart from that, India will also host white-ball series against West Indies and Sri Lanka. The much-awaited Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia is also set to begin in January 2027.
