West Indies vs South Africa 1st T20I: West Indies defeated South Africa by seven wickets in the first T20I at the Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba, Trinidad on Friday, August 23.

West Indies have taken a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20I series on the back of a remarkable performance in all departments.

The hosts chased down a challenging target of 175 runs in just 17.5 overs with Roston Chase smashing the winning boundary off Kwena Maphaka.

He remained unbeaten on 4 with Nicholas Pooran, West Indies' top run-getter of the match, being at the other end.

Pooran continued his brilliant form in the shortest form and smashed 65 runs in just 26 deliveries with the help of two fours and seven sixes.

Chasing the target, West Indies were off to a flying start with Shai Hope and Alick Athanaze stitching an 84-run opening stand.

While Hope reached his half-century, Athanaze was dismissed for 40 runs off 30 balls by Ottneil Baartman in the eighth over.

Hope kept going and added 54 more runs with Pooran for the second wicket before departing for 51 in the 14th over.

Pooran then started dealing in boundaries and put up a 34-run partnership for the third wicket with skipper Rovman Powell.

Powell (7) departed cheaply in the 18th over off Maphaka before Pooran and Chase finished things off in style.

Baartman picked up two wickets for South Africa whereas Maphaka found a scalp as well.

Earlier, West Indies opted to bowl first after winning the toss and did well to restrict the visitors to 174/4 in their 20 overs.

Tristan Stubbs was the top run-getter for them, having played a fine knock of 76 runs in just 42 balls whereas Patrick Kruger smashed 44 runs in 32 deliveries.

For West Indies, Matthew Forde was the pick of the bowlers as he took three wickets while Shamar Joseph took two wickets.

Akeal Hosein and Romario Shepherd founded a scalp each as well.

The second match of the series will be played at the same venue on Sunday.
