A pre-test exercise has been launched in a village in South Delhi to evaluate the technical and administrative processes ahead of the country's first fully digital census.

The Delhi government’s Revenue Department serves as the nodal agency for Census 2027, which is scheduled to take place between April 2026 and February 2027. A senior official from the Revenue Department stated that this trial run aims to assess the effectiveness and adequacy of the applications and procedures that will be used in the digital census.

Details of the Trial Run According to the official, the sample size for this test covers approximately 2,000 people. The exercise, which began on November 10, will conclude this Sunday. The process involves testing and refining mobile apps, data collection methodologies, digital systems, and the logistics required for the main Census 2027 operation.

Census To Be Conducted In Two Phases

The census will be carried out in two distinct stages:

First Phase (House-Listing Operations): Commencing on April 1, 2026, this phase will involve collecting data regarding the housing status, assets, and amenities of every family.

Second Phase: Beginning on February 1, 2027, this phase will focus on collecting demographic, socio-economic, cultural and personal details.
