Days after a techie named Yuvraj Mehta's death by drowning in Noida raised serious questions of sheer negligence on the part of authorities, a biker in Delhi lost his life after he fell into a pool-seized pit, reportedly dug by the Delhi Jal Board in Janakpuri.

The visuals of the incident are being widely circulated on social media, showing the deceased wearing a helmet, a safety gear advertently promoted to reduce casualties during road accidents.

According to a report by Money Control, the family of the deceased, identified as Kamal, searched for him all night after he went missing while on his way home from work in Rohini.

The police said they received a call about the incident at around 7 am, after which they rushed to the spot. "We are investigating the matter to ascertain the exact sequence of events," the officer added.

A senior police officer told news agency PTI that preliminary investigations suggest the location was a Delhi Jal Board construction site, which was properly barricaded.

Family searched for Kamal whole night

The family said that they searched for Kamal the whole night before receiving a call from the police at around 7:30 am. The police informed them about the incident.

The family has blamed the Jal Board of negligence, which, according to them, claimed Kamal's life.

Political slugfest starts

The incident has triggered a sharp political reaction from the opposition Aam Aadmi Party. Former Delhi minister Saurabh Bharadwaj shared the pictures of the site, showing the deceased lying in the pit beside his bike.

He wrote, "Shocking !!! An innocent biker fell into a deep pothole on the road, got stuck, lay there all night, and died. The BJP government in Delhi has learned nothing from the Noida incident. They just keep lying every day. Janakpuri District Centre, Delhi."

In another post, he alleged that complaints were already filed regarding the pit, but were ignored. He said, "Just another innocent bread-earner. The main road under the Delhi Govt’s PWD was dug up by DJB. Local RWAs had complained multiple times to the authorities about this danger but who listens? This tragedy was waiting to happen. Despite complaints, this death trap was not properly barricaded to prevent loss of lives. Imagine the family and small kids of this man who must have been waiting all night for him, anxious for him to return home. And they will wait for their lives now."

Govt orders probe 

Reacting to the tragic incident, Delhi Minister Ashish Sood, who reached the site in the monring, said, "I received news of this unfortunate accident around 8:30-9 am, and I have been here since then... Delhi Jal Board work was in progress here, and I have instructed the Jal Board to investigate it. If anyone is found responsible, they will not be spared... The Jal Board had conducted an audit of all safety protocols and issued circulars... The police are looking into the cause of the accident..."
