Delhi Elevated Ring Road Project: In a major step toward relieving traffic congestion in Delhi, the national capital’s government has given green light to the first corridor of the elevated ring road project. This ambitious project aims to alleviate the long-standing problem of traffic jams on the city's major roads.

The project is planned to be implemented in phases. Proposed in six phases, Phase 1A has been prioritised. This phase will be approximately 5 km long and will be built between Majnu ka Tila and Salimgarh Fort. The total length of the proposed elevated ring road will be 57.5 km.

According to sources cited by jagran.com, this corridor has been prioritised because it has the highest traffic volume and is considered technically feasible to build. A preliminary project report (PPR) has already been prepared. The DPR is expected to be completed within the next two months, after which the tender process will begin.

-Azadpur Chowk to Metcalfe House Junction (7 km)

-Salimgarh Fort to DND Flyover (11.5 km)

-DND Flyover to Moti Bagh Metro Station (10.5 km)

-Moti Bagh Metro Station to Rajouri Garden (10 km)

-Rajouri Garden to Azadpur Chowk (13.5 km)

Relief From Jam At Kashm Gate

According to officials, the corridor, which partially falls under the National Highway (NH) ambit, is primarily intended to ease traffic flow. There are several serious congestion points along the route, especially in the Kashmere Gate area. This route runs parallel to the Yamuna River, which falls within the O-Zone. Therefore, the project will be planned in accordance with the Master Development Plan.

The corridor's route also passes under the grade separator near the Kashmere Gate junction and the Red Line Metro, posing a major challenge in integrating with existing transportation infrastructure. Furthermore, the route also passes through three ASI-protected monuments, including the Salimgarh Fort. Officials have clarified that all ASI guidelines will be strictly followed during construction.

The project seeks to revive the original vision of the Mahatma Gandhi Ring Road, which was intended to ensure smooth and fast traffic flow around Delhi. Over the years, rapid urbanization, increasing vehicle traffic, and the limitations of public transportation have resulted in the Ring Road becoming one of Delhi's most congested areas, contributing to air and noise pollution.
