A cleaning staff member at a private hospital in Delhi is accused of stealing gold jewelry from a woman who had just passed away. The incident occurred at a private nursing home in Krishna Nagar, east Delhi, where the woman died.

A video circulating on social media allegedly shows the staffer removing items from the deceased woman's ears.

A formal complaint was filed by the woman's son, Naveen Kumar Gupta, a resident of Shahdara. He told police that he had rushed his ailing mother to the emergency ward at Goyal Hospital on November 11. Doctors later recommended transferring her to another hospital for further treatment, PTI reported.

As Gupta went outside to arrange for an ambulance, the staff member reportedly stole the jewelry from his mother’s body, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara), Prashant Gautam, said in a statement.

“My mother was placed on oxygen immediately upon admission. When the doctors advised us to transfer her, I went out to call the ambulance,” Gupta explained to PTI.

Upon returning, Gupta discovered that his mother’s earrings and ear chain were missing. “By the time I came back, she had passed away. When we returned with other family members after performing her last rites, we noticed the earrings were gone,” Gupta recounted.

Initially, hospital staff denied any knowledge of the missing jewelry and instructed the family to check carefully before removing the body. After performing the last rites, Gupta and his family went back to the hospital and later contacted the police. He noted that an FIR was not immediately filed, but that the family did recover the earrings, though the ear chain was still missing.

Authorities confirmed that the hospital had returned the earrings but could not recover the chain. “The sweeper took it, and the CCTV footage shows her stealing it,” Gupta said.

A case has been registered under Section 303(2) (theft) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Krishna Nagar police station, and an investigation is ongoing, PTI reported.

“I don’t want anyone to experience something like this when they’re already mourning the loss of a loved one,” Gupta added.
