Delhi MCD Bypolls: The by-elections for 12 wards of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) took place peacefully on Sunday, with a voter turnout of 38.51 per cent recorded by 5:30 pm. This is a decline from the 50.47 per cent turnout in the 2022 MCD elections.
The elections sparked fresh political tensions between the BJP and the AAP, with both parties presenting contrasting narratives on the polling day. According to the State Election Commission, 265,825 voters participated out of 699,537 eligible voters. Among the 12 wards, Chandni Mahal saw the highest voter turnout at 56 per cent, while Greater Kailash had the lowest at 27 per cent. In the 2022 municipal elections, Greater Kailash had a turnout of 39.07 per cent.
The election process proceeded without incident, and there were no reports of disturbances or technical difficulties, such as EVM malfunctions.
However, the AAP accused the BJP of "foul play", alleging that a former station house officer campaigned for the BJP candidate in Dakshinpuri ward. The BJP responded by accusing AAP of already preparing excuses for a potential loss.
