Cyclone Ditwah Live Updates: Cyclone Ditwah is moving closer towards the Indian coast, bringing heavy to very heavy rainfall to several regions, including Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry. The storm, which moved out of Sri Lanka on Saturday afternoon, caused widespread devastation, leaving at least 153 people dead and 191 missing, according to news agency PTI.
In its latest update issued on Sunday, November 30, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that Cyclone Ditwah had moved nearly northward at around 5 kmph over the previous six hours. As of 11:30 PM on Saturday, November 29, the storm was centred over the southwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining North Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts, near latitude 10.7°N and longitude 80.6°E.
The cyclonic storm is expected to move northward, parallel to the North Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts over the next 24 hours, the IMD said. The IMD has issued a warning of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu, southern Andhra Pradesh, and Puducherry for the next two days. The inclement weather conditions have also disrupted air travel, with the Chennai Airport cancelling 47 flights scheduled for Sunday.
In response, the Tamil Nadu government has set up 6,000 relief camps, and 28 teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed, Minister KKSSR Ramachandran told ANI.
