Despite the ongoing monsoon, crowded underground metro stations continue to face severe heat and ventilation issues. On August 29 and September 1, technical faults on the Yellow and Blue lines caused heavy passenger congestion at major interchange stations, leading to difficulty in breathing for commuters.

To address this, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has begun installing High Volume Low Speed (HVLS) fans at key stations. In the first phase, a total of 31 HVLS fans have been installed at:

  • Hauz Khas: 18 fans
  • Kashmere Gate: 8 fans
  • Azadpur: 5 fans

In the next phase, additional fans will be installed at other busy stations to improve air circulation and passenger comfort.

HVLS fans are large ceiling fans designed to circulate a high volume of air in large indoor spaces, unlike conventional fans that operate at high speed with limited airflow. They are energy-efficient, require low maintenance, and help maintain a normal temperature even during peak crowding. DMRC plans to install these fans at more stations based on passenger numbers and station design.

Delhi Metro by the Numbers

  • Daily passengers: 60 lakh (Approx)
  • Metro stations in Delhi-NCR: 289
  • Network length: 394 km across 12 lines
  • Phase IV expansion: 65 km of new corridors underway, network to exceed 450 km

With these measures, DMRC aims to improve ventilation and commuter comfort across its underground stations, particularly during peak hours and technical disruptions.
