The Delhi government is working on a comprehensive policy to regulate e-rickshaws in the national capital, aiming to ease traffic congestion while strengthening their role as an effective last-mile connectivity option.
Officials on Monday said the Transport Department will soon hold a formal meeting to finalise the framework of the policy. A senior government official noted that while e-rickshaws play a crucial role in ferrying commuters from metro stations and bus stops, they also employ thousands of people, making a balanced regulatory approach necessary.

The proposed policy is expected to address key issues such as registration of e-rickshaws, development of supporting infrastructure, including charging facilities, and the identification of designated routes and parking stands. Though e-rickshaws were initially introduced as an eco-friendly mode of transport, their increasing numbers, slow speed,s and lack of regulation have contributed to traffic bottlenecks and raised safety concerns.
According to official data from the Delhi government, 2,04,131 e-rickshaws were registered on the Vahan dashboard as of January 2026. However, officials said the actual number of e-rickshaws operating in the city is likely to be significantly higher.

As part of the policy, the government is also considering allowing unregistered e-rickshaw owners a grace period to regularise their vehicles. Officials said this would help protect livelihoods while ensuring better compliance with safety norms and traffic regulations.
