The Delhi government has decided to fast-track the work of providing basic civic amenities like roads, lanes and drains in the national capital's over 1,700 unauthorised colonies. As part of this initiative, 39 tenders for development works have been issued simultaneously. According to a government official, special attention will also be paid to the quality of the work.
The Scope Of The Problem And Affected Areas
Millions of residents in Delhi's unauthorised colonies live without basic facilities like drinking water, sewer lines, and paved roads. Waterlogging and the drainage of dirty water are among the biggest challenges here.
Most Affected Areas: Karawal Nagar, Mustafabad, Najafgarh, Palam, Kirari, and Chhatarpur.
Number of Colonies: Najafgarh has 172, Uttam Nagar has 136, and Kirari has 105 unauthorised colonies. Karawal Nagar and Mustafabad have no authorised colonies at all.
New Strategy To Speed Up Work
Until now, development work in these colonies was primarily being carried out by the Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC). However, to speed up the work, the government has now also authorised the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to undertake projects in these areas. It is expected that with two agencies working together, the projects will be completed sooner.

These Colonies Set To Benefit
Under the 39 recently issued tenders, roads and drains will be constructed in several areas, including Mustafabad, Karawal Nagar, Shiv Vihar, Gandhi Nagar, Badli, Ghonda, and Narela. Prominent colonies that are part of this push include Shiv Vihar (Phases 1, 2, and 9), Roshan Vihar (Mustafabad), Nehru Vihar (Karawal Nagar), Kanti Nagar Extension (Krishna Nagar), and Jeewan Park (Badli). This step is also significant as the residents of these colonies are considered a politically important group.
