Delhi Police have arrested three motorists and registered criminal cases against them for driving on the wrong side of the road, making it the first Union Territory in the country to do so, officials said. Police clarified that the offences are bailable and the accused were released on bail after arrest.
A senior traffic official said cases would be filed only in instances where the violation created serious danger. “Special focus will be on wrong-side driving during peak morning and evening hours on major roads. However, if a slow-moving two-wheeler is seen driving on the wrong side on a small road, registering an FIR may not be justified, and they’ll be allowed to go after imposing a fine,” the officer said.

As per figures released by the traffic police, the number of challans rose sharply to 1,44,490 in 2025 from 1,04,720 in 2024. At the same time, the number of notices issued saw a decline, with 1,27,395 notices served in 2025 compared to 1,78,448 the previous year.
Three Separate FIRs Registered Against Motorists for Dangerous Wrong-Side Driving in Delhi
Delhi Police have booked three motorists in separate incidents for driving on the wrong side of the road, citing serious risks to public safety and traffic order.
1. First Incident - Delhi Cantt Area
The earliest case was recorded on January 3 at the Delhi Cantt police station, following a complaint by ASI Sunil Kumar of the Delhi Traffic Police. The accused, Aman, a resident of Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh, was allegedly spotted driving his WagonR at high speed against the flow of traffic near the Hanuman Mandir red light around 4:45 pm. The stretch is a narrow two-lane carriageway, and his reckless movement forced oncoming vehicles to brake suddenly, creating the risk of a serious collision.
Police registered the case under Section 281 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with rash and negligent driving. Further checks revealed that Aman did not hold a valid driving licence and that the car was not insured, prompting additional charges under Sections 3/181, 146 and 196 of the Motor Vehicles Act. He was taken into custody and later released on bail.
2. Second Incident - Kapashera Region
In the second matter, police in Kapashera registered an FIR on Monday against Ankit Gaur, who was allegedly caught riding his motorcycle on the wrong side of the road in the Samalkha area. The act disrupted traffic flow and endangered commuters, leading officers to initiate criminal proceedings against him.
3. Third Incident - Vasant Kunj South
The third case was filed at Vasant Kunj South police station against Sanij Kumar, a native of Amethi, Uttar Pradesh. He was reportedly driving his Tata Tigor in the wrong direction on the busy Mehrauli-Mahipalpur Road, heading towards Mata Chowk. Police said the violation posed a serious hazard to both motorists and pedestrians in the high-traffic zone.

Officials explained that previously, motorists caught driving on the wrong side were usually penalised with monetary fines. However, the policy has now been tightened following an increase in road accidents. Under the earlier system, offenders were fined Rs 5,000 for the first violation and up to Rs 10,000 for subsequent offences, with additional measures such as suspension of driving licences and other legal consequences also being applicable.
