To reduce its critical dependence on the Mandola substation and prevent a recurrence of large-scale power outages, Delhi Transco Limited (DTL) will establish a new 400 kV substation in Gopalpur, North Delhi. The decision follows recent disruptions that affected hundreds of thousands of residents and critical infrastructure in the capital.

Addressing Dependency On Mandola Substation

Currently, the Power Grid Corporation of India's 400 kV substation in Mandola, Ghaziabad, supplies 1,200 megawatts of electricity to large parts of North and East Delhi. However, faults at this facility have repeatedly disrupted the city's power supply.

- In August 2025, a fault at the Mandola substation caused a power outage in several areas of North Delhi, affecting approximately 800,000 residents, the metro network, and the international bus terminal at Kashmere Gate.

- A similar disruption occurred in June 2024.

Proposed Infrastructure Upgrades

At a recent meeting of the Delhi Operational Coordination Committee, the following plans were discussed to strengthen the power grid:

New 400 kV Gopalpur Substation: The primary initiative is the construction of a new substation in Gopalpur to provide an alternative power source for North Delhi.

Interconnection of Substations: A proposal has been made to connect the 220 kV Sarita Vihar substation with the 220 kV Timarpur substation to improve supply in the area.

Ensuring Uninterrupted Power For Critical Areas

To safeguard the power supply for the VIP area of Civil Lines—which includes the Raj Niwas, the Chief Minister's residence, and the Legislative Assembly—a dedicated plan has been ordered.

Battery Energy Storage System (BESS): Instructions have been given to prepare a plan for installing a BESS in Civil Lines. This system, similar to one installed in Kilokari, South Delhi, in May 2025, will act as a backup, ensuring a continuous power supply in the event of any disruption from the main grid.
