Delhi on Thursday woke up to its coldest day with the temperature dropping to 2.3 degrees Celsius. According to the IMD's Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Delhi, Palam recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 2.3 degrees Celsius.
Among other stations, Safdarjung recorded a minimum temperature of 2.9 degrees Celsius. Lodi Road, Ridge and Ayanagar recorded 3.4, 4.5 and 2.7 degrees Celsius.
Delhi continues to face harsh winters as the city has seen breaking of its season's coldest temperature record a few times. In Palam, it is the lowest minimum temperature since 2010. The second lowest was recorded on January 7, 2013, when the mercury had dropped to 2.6 degrees Celsius.
The temperatures are way below normal at all the weather stations, pointing to the persistence of cold wave conditions across the city. The national capital is expected to continue to reel under cold wave conditions even tomorrow.
The chilling morning also saw dense fog conditions in the national capital, reducing visibility. The IMD has issued an alert for dense fog.
At 5:30 am on Thursday, visibility at Palam airport dipped to around 50 metres. Safdarjung, on the other hand, recorded visibility close to 100 metres.
The weather department has also issued an alert for a cold wave in the neighbouring states, including Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Punjab, and Rajasthan.
In its weather bulletin, the weather department said, "Dense to very dense fog conditions very likely to prevail in morning/night hours in isolated/some parts over Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi till 16th and Dense fog in isolated pockets till 19th January 2026."
