Plans to launch the 'Water Taxi' cruise service on the Yamuna have been delayed due to recent floods in Delhi. Originally scheduled for November, the service is now expected to begin in January 2026. The project aims to boost tourism by operating on a 6-kilometre stretch from Jagatpur (Shani Mandir) to Sonia Vihar.

In its first phase, two cruises were to be introduced. However, heavy silt deposited at the Sonia Vihar boarding point during the floods will require time-consuming removal before operations can commence. Ticket prices for the service are yet to be announced.

The Delhi government had announced the project in March, with support from five agencies: the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), Delhi Development Authority (DDA), Delhi Jal Board (DJB), Delhi Tourism and Transport Development Corporation (DTTDC), and the Irrigation and Flood Control Department. DDA has provided the land, while the Irrigation and Flood Control Department will assist with coastal facilities and charging infrastructure.

Each cruise will be electric or solar-hybrid, with a seating capacity of 20-30 passengers, onboard bio-toilets, air-conditioning, and audio-visual facilities. Operators will ensure safety with life jackets, first-aid kits, and mandatory pre-departure safety briefings. Cruises will run a minimum of four trips daily, with operations, maintenance, and environmental compliance the responsibility of the operator.

The project also includes provisions to increase the number of cruises based on public demand, ensuring a sustainable and enjoyable river tourism experience.
