Giving new impetus to the development of the Narela sub-city, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) on Saturday handed over possession of land to Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) and Delhi Teachers University (DeTU) for their new campuses. Delhi's Lieutenant Governor, VK Saxena and Education Minister, Ashish Sood, were present on the occasion.

Land Details: 22 Acres For IP University, 12 Acres For DeTU

Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) has been handed 22.43 acres of land, for which a payment of Rs 162.90 crore has been made. Meanwhile, GGSIPU will now establish its third campus in Narela; its existing campuses are in Dwarka and Surajmal Vihar. Delhi Teachers University (DeTU) has been allotted 12.69 acres of land in Narela Sector G-2/G-6, for which the Delhi government has paid the DDA Rs 92.16 crore. DeTU is currently operating from a school building in Mukherjee Nagar, which lacks basic facilities. Once the new campus is built, the university will have its own dedicated, modern infrastructure.

Developing Narela As An Education Hub With Metro Connectivity

Congratulating both universities, the Lieutenant Governor and the Education Minister stated that the opening of new campuses in Narela will provide high-quality education not only to students from Delhi but from across the country, further strengthening Delhi's position as a major centre for higher education. In January 2024, 181 acres of land in Narela were allotted to seven government universities and institutions. All the institutions have been given plots in close proximity to each other to enable better use of resources through shared facilities such as libraries and sports.

In November 2025, the DDA had also approved the change in land use for university campuses in the Narela sub-city. The area is located near Urban Extension Road-I and the proposed Rithala–Narela–Kundli metro corridor, which will further improve access and connectivity. These efforts are considered a major step towards developing Narela as an emerging education and infrastructure hub for Delhi.

Resolution Of Funding Delays

The DDA stated that the land was allotted to these universities in January 2024, but the then Kejriwal government made no payment for it, causing the project to stall. Despite repeated requests from the Lieutenant Governor, no provision was made in the budget, which led to the land allotment being halted. The new government made a provision of Rs 500 crore for the universities in its first budget, of which Rs 452 crore has so far been paid to the DDA. Additionally, a further Rs 500 crore has been sanctioned in the revised estimates (RE).

LG Praises Education Budget

Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena praised the Delhi government for allocating 19 per cent of its budget to education, stating that quality education is the right of every citizen and that the current government is putting this into practice.
