The city is Norilsk, located in northern Siberia, about 300 km north of the Arctic Circle and extremely far from Moscow. Set up during the 1930s, it started out as an industrial town for mining nickel, copper and various ores. Life here depends mostly on big-scale mining and metal processing.

One of the biggest reasons Norilsk feels depressing is its harsh climate. Winters are very long here, almost for 11 months, with temperatures that can drop up to -50 degrees Celsius. For many months, people live without daylight, as the sun barely rises above the horizon.
