Airplane Speed: The speed provides sufficient lift for the aircraft to take off. Commercial aircraft usually move at different speeds based on the flight phase, with every stage calling for accurate aerodynamic control. Takeoff typically sees major passenger aircraft move between the average speeds of 150 and 180 mph or 250 to 300 km/h, depending on weather conditions, the weight, and size of the plane, according to World Aviation ATO. However, smaller private planes can take off at lower speeds, which range from 60 to 80 mph or 95 to 130 km/h.
At cruising altitude, cruising speed is much greater. Commercial airliners typically cruise at a speed of approximately 500 to 600 mph or 800 to 850 km/h, which is 0.78 to 0.85 times the speed of sound, called the Mach speed. This speed is at the cruising altitudes of 30,000 to 41,000 feet, as per the World Aviation ATO, because thinner air creates less drag and makes fuel more efficient, helping planes to fly efficiently at such high speeds.

Landing, in contrast, needs a controlled deceleration. As aircraft descend, they slow to around 150 to 170 mph or 240 to 270 km/h before landing. Flaps, slats, and landing gear are used by pilots to create drag and provide lift at lower speeds to ensure a safe, smooth landing.
Additionally, Military planes and supersonic aircraft travel faster than the speed of sound, which is more than 767 mph or 1,235 km/h.
