Venice Of The North:  Various cities in Europe are described as Venice because of their complex and diverse canal network, but the nickname ‘Venice of the North’ is most commonly referred to Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands. This title best describes Amsterdam’s phenomenal canals, bridged arches, and those 17th-century perfectly architectural buildings that reflect onto the water. The city’s canals are covered with over 100 kilometers of waterways and over 1500 bridges, each designed and detailed with special care in the Dutch Golden Century.

These canals were not just made with the intention to be used as a means of transport and defense, but also to reflect the architectural brilliance and urban refinement of the city, which has also been on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The canals of Amsterdam are surrounded by ancient merchant houses, museums, and cafes, which provide picturesque sceneries that recreate the whole Venice experience in Europe. Houseboats quietly sail along the canals, a sense of peace is in the ambience of the city, and the art and culture are also much loved.

Additionally, the romantic candlelit canal cruises, especially at night when the bridges are adorned with golden lights, have made Amsterdam one of the destinations where tourists can embrace beauty and calm.

Even cities like Bruges in Belgium, Stockholm in Sweden, and Saint Petersburg in Russia have also been called the Venice of the North occasionally due to their own impressive canal systems.

Amsterdam, however, remains the most widely recognised Venice Of The North, being the perfect blend of picturesque nature, infrastructure of the city, and its culture. Along with its magnificent canals, its rich history, and its beautiful atmosphere, Amsterdam is the very representation of Venice in Northern Europe.
