The insect with the most powerful sting in the world is the Bullet Ant (Paraponera clavata). The sting is said to feel like getting shot by a bullet, hence the name. Victims describe it as a burning, throbbing pain that lasts for 12 to 24 hours. It is ranked at the very top (level 4+) of the Schmidt Sting Pain Index.

Where Are Bullet Ants Found?

Bullet ants live in rainforests of Central and South America, especially in countries like Brazil, Nicaragua and Paraguay. They usually build nests at the base of trees and are very protective of their colony. How Dangerous Is the Sting?

The pain is extremely intense but not deadly. It may cause temporary paralysis, swelling, and numbness. However, no known deaths have been caused by a bullet ant sting.

Used in Tribal Rituals

Bullet ants are used in coming-of-age ceremonies by the Satere-Mawe tribe in the Amazon. To demonstrate their strength and bravery, young boys put on gloves filled with bullet ants. To pass the test, they must withstand several stings without displaying any signs of pain.
