Floating National Park: Can you imagine a national park that floats? That is India for you; it is world-famous for its unique and diverse locations. One such place is the world’s only floating national park, named the Keibul Lamjao National Park. It is situated in the Bishnupur district of Manipur, India. To be precise, this breathtaking and uniquely mesmerising national park is built on the Loktak Lake, which is also regarded as northeast India's largest freshwater lake. Are you also wondering how Keibul Lamjao National Park is floating and not built on the ground, unlike others? This is because of the wide vegetation known as ‘phumdis.’ These thick, floating mats, known as Phundis, are made from decomposed plants, soil, and organic matter.
These phumdis rise and fall with the lake's water levels, becoming a reason for a unique ecosystem that back the flora and fauna of the region in a way not seen anywhere else on Earth. Keibul Lamjao National Park covers an area of about 40 square kilometres, according to the bishnupur.nic.in, and that is the reason it is also known as the ‘Jewel of Manipur.’

Not just that, this floating national park is also home to the endangered Sangai deer, which is also known as the dancing deer because of its delicate and graceful movements as it walks on the floating vegetation. The national park is not just floating, but also has cultural and ecological significance. The population of Keibul Lamjao park also includes diverse wildlife like hog deer, wild boars, otters, and migratory birds, led by its wetland ecosystem.
