First OTT Platform Launched In India:  Reliance Entertainment's BIGFlix was the first OTT platform launched in India in 2008. BIGFlix started the over-the-top (OTT) streaming mode for the Indian audience. It used to provide movie-on-demand services for millions. This platform is known to introduce a new modern way of watching films, which means accessing movies digitally without the need to subscribe to broadcast or cable TV. However, the platform was unable to pull off in India due to rising content demand, user preference and pricing.

Later, Digivive released nexGTv in 2010. It was the first OTT mobile app in India. NexGTv was all about watching live TV and on-demand content through smartphones. It made an enormous impact by being the first to stream Indian Premier League (IPL) matches live on mobiles in 2013 and 2014, taking the use of OTT platforms beyond movies to live sports.

However, the OTT revolution in India was initiated with the launch of Hotstar in 2015 by Star India, which is now known as JioStar. It became a super hit, all thanks to live sports, TV shows, and movies, especially because the platform became the exclusive broadcaster of the IPL, which drew millions of Indian viewers. The platform made regional languages and mass audiences popular for OTT viewing and made OTT the mainstream entertainment mode in India.

International streaming giants like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video also entered the Indian market in 201. Their entry in the Indian OTT landscape revolutionised the Indian content and the digital content viewing scene here.
