Significance of Mahaparinirvan Diwas 2025: Each year on December 6th marks the death anniversary of Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar. He passed away in 1956. The man was known as the Father Of The Indian Constitution, due to his major contribution in framing the Indian Constitution, the document on the basis the nation of billions works. However, have you ever thought why Ambedkar’s Death Anniversary is known as the Mahaparinirvan Diwas? The term is derived from its Buddhist roots, ‘Mahaparinirvan,’ in honour of Ambedkar’s ideology, which was greatly influenced by Buddhism’s path of equality and liberation from caste oppression. Therefore, the day is celebrated with the remembrance of Bhimrao Ambedkar’s lifelong fight against social injustices and being the chief architect of India's Constitution.

It is also important to note that, specifically, Mahaparinirvan means the final nirvana after death and being out of the vicious circle of birth, death, and karma. Being inspired by these virtues, Dr Ambedkar embraced Buddhism on October 14, 1956, along with several of his followers and left behind the Hindu caste hierarchies. He believed that spiritual equality is a way to Dalit empowerment.
