Textiles are one of the major industries in the global economy. Additionally, it is a key aspect of many other industries, from healthcare to agriculture and transportation. However, do you know which city is famously known as the ‘City of Textiles’ and why? Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu is known as the ‘Textile City of India.’ It is also known as the Manchester of South India, due to its rich textile industry.
Why is Coimbatore Called the ‘City of Textiles’?
Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu is known as the ‘Textile City of India,’ as the place is all about spinning mills to garment units and cotton yarn production for national as well as global textile output. This South Indian city produces more than 40 per cent of India's cotton yarn and about 80 per cent of its textile machinery.

The reason for the city’s textile success is due to flourishing cotton cultivation, which also attracted British investors like Sir Robert Stanes in 1888. He later found Stanes Mills here. The good climate, skilled labour force, and sustainable resources contributed to Coimbatore’s growth as the ‘Textile City of India.
