Surat is popularly called as the 'Diamond city of India.' According to several reports, 90% to 99.9% of the world's diamonds are processed in Surat only. Surat’s diamond industry has a rich history since the 20th century.  90% of polishing of diamonds is done in Surat. 

Surat is not only famous for diamonds but also for its textile industry, which resulted in its another nickname’ Silk City.’ It is considered an economic powerhouse in terms of the global textile industry. 

In today’s era, Surat is the diamond cutting center of the world. Approximately 9 out of 10 rough diamonds are cut in Surat before exporting worldwide. There are approximately 4,000 diamond cutters in Surat and 1.5 million people work directly or indirectly in the industry.

Flyover City of India: Surat is also known as the Flyover city of India because of large numbers of flyovers and their connectivity.

Surat is extremely popular for its food, especially for its street foods. There is a phrase used in Surat which says "Eat in Surat and Die in Kashi" for the best experience.

Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology, Surat is one of the most prestigious engineering institutes located in Surat. Also, the Indian Institute of Information Technology was established in 2017.
