For instance, let’s take a typical PAN that looks like this -ABCDS1234R. To break down this number:

1. The first three letters of PAN are a random alphabetic series, issued sequentially (AAA to ZZZ).

2. The fourth letter represents the type of PAN holder. For example, P for Individual, C is for Company, H is for HUF (Hindu Undivided Family), F is for Firm, and A is Association of Persons.

3. The most intriguing part is that the fifth letter of your PAN card number is the first letter of the cardholder’s surname or the entity’s name. For example, if your surname is Singh, then S will be the 5th letter of your PAN.

4. The next four digits of your PAN number are a sequential number from 0001 to 9999.

5. The last letter of your PAN is an alphabetic check digit, which is generated through a formula to prevent duplication and fraud of your PAN card.

For Example:

If your PAN is ABCPK1234D:

-  ABC is the series.

-  P shows it belongs to an individual.

-  K indicates the cardholder’s surname starts with K.

-  1234 is the serial number.

- D is the check digit to validate authenticity.
