India-New Zealand FTA 2026 For Students: Negotiations regarding a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and New Zealand had been ongoing for a long time, and the deal has now been finalized. This will directly benefit Indian students and workers. India and New Zealand signed the historic agreement on Monday (April 27), following successful negotiations in late 2025.
In addition to trade, this agreement establishes a consensus on investment and mobility, standing to benefit not only businesspeople but also Indian students and workers. If you wish to work in New Zealand or are currently studying there, things will become significantly easier for you compared to the past.
New Zealand is a high-income nation offering excellent opportunities for both employment and education, being home to some of the world's top-tier universities. There is a high demand for professionals in sectors such as dairy, IT, and healthcare.
Over 300,000 non-resident Indians and people of Indian origin reside in New Zealand, constituting approximately 5 per cent of the total population. Through the signed FTA, Indian workers and students have gained specific, secured pathways to build their futures in the country.
What Does FTA hold for Indian workers?
Under the FTA, New Zealand will now issue 'Temporary Employment Entry Visas' to Indian workers. A total of 5,000 work visas will be issued annually, each valid for a period of three years. Through this visa, Indian professionals will be able to easily travel to New Zealand to take up employment.
AYUSH practitioners, yoga instructors, Indian chefs, and music teachers will also be eligible to receive this visa for employment opportunities in New Zealand. In addition to these opportunities, Indian workers employed in sectors such as IT, engineering, healthcare, education, and construction will also be able to secure jobs in New Zealand. Furthermore, 1,000 Working Holiday Visas will also be issued annually. These Working Holiday Visas will be valid for a period of 12 months, allowing Indian youth to work alongside their travel explorations.
What does the FTA offer students?
Moreover, the benefits of the FTA are not limited solely to Indian workers; New Zealand has also extended a gift to students. The FTA places a special emphasis on student mobility. Indian students in New Zealand are permitted to work part-time for up to 20 hours per week alongside their studies, a provision that remains valid regardless of any future changes to regulations.
Similarly, if an Indian student is pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in subjects related to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), they will be granted a three-year post-study work visa.

Is there a benefit for Doctorate holders?
The agreement ensures that those who have reached the highest levels of academic achievement receive extended benefits for their dedication. Individuals who have earned a Doctorate will be authorized to work in New Zealand for four years post-graduation.
This implies that, upon obtaining their degree, such students can comfortably work in New Zealand for an extended period, allowing them to gain significant international experience and research opportunities. Thanks to these measures, life for Indian students in New Zealand is set to become significantly easier.
The implementation of these visa quotas and study provisions is expected to strengthen the people-to-people ties between the two nations while addressing critical labor shortages in New Zealand's growing economy.
