Physics Olympiad India 2026: India's young physicists delivered an extraordinary performance at the 56th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) 2026, held in Bucaramanga, Colombia, with all five members of the Indian team winning Gold Medals. The achievement has brought immense pride to the nation and reaffirmed India's growing stature in science education on the global stage.

With this sweep, India secured the World No. 1 rank jointly with China, Kazakhstan, Russia, South Korea, and Taiwan, competing among 381 students from 87 countries. The Indian medal winners were Kanishk Jain from Pune, Riddhesh Anant Bendale from Indore, Rishit Garg from Dwarka, Shresth Suraiya from Mumbai, and Svarit Joshi from Ahmedabad.


A Decade-Long Legacy Continues

This performance extends India's strong track record at the International Physics Olympiad, with every Indian participant over the past decade securing a podium finish. The achievement reflects the depth of India's Olympiad programme, led by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), a National Centre of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research under the Department of Atomic Energy.

As India's nodal centre for the Olympiad programme, HBCSE identifies and mentors talented pre-university students through a multi-stage selection process, orientation camps, and intensive training.

Officials Hail The Achievement

Dr. Ajit Kumar Mohanty, Secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy and Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, congratulated the winners, calling the five gold medals and joint World No. 1 rank a testament to the students' talent and the HBCSE-TIFR (Tata Institute of Fundamental Research) programme's commitment. He credited the students, their parents, teachers, and mentors for the achievement.

Recognition For Mentors And Team Leaders

The Department of Atomic Energy also acknowledged team leaders Prof. Anwesh Mazumdar and Dr. Leena Joshi, along with scientific observers Prof. Ananda Dasgupta and Ms. Nisha Kelkar, for their role in preparing the team.

Prof. Arnab Bhattacharya, Centre Director of HBCSE, noted that such achievements are the result of decades of patient mentoring, supported consistently by the Department of Atomic Energy.
