The Assam government proposed unifying the state boards responsible for grades 10 and 12 education into one body in order to facilitate the administration of secondary education. According to media reports, the Assam State School Education Board Bill, 2024 has been presented in the Assembly with the objective of instituting a fresh governing body to supervise education up to the 12th grade within the state.
The proposed law aims to create the Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB) by merging the current Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA) and the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC). The main goal stated in the preamble of the legislation is to combine and boost the supervision, development, and development of secondary education in Assam, the statement mentioned, as reported by the news agency PTI.
The merger of the boards was decided upon at a state cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in November of the previous year. The grade 12 board exams are currently handled by AHSEC, whereas the grade 10 board exams are being administered by SEBA.
The government will designate a chairman to lead the ASSEB, and vice-chairmen, who will be chosen by the government, will manage particular divisions. A total of 21 of the new board members will have three-year renewable terms.
The decision to merge follows reports of paper leaks involving at least two question papers during the Class 10 board examinations 2023. As a result, SEBA, the conducting body for Class 10 exams, in coordination with the government, had to reschedule examinations for General Science and all subjects under Modern Indian Languages (MIL), including Assamese and English.
