Board Exam Preparation 2024: Many children have difficulty with some or the other subjects in school and need tutors to help them. This can be for various reasons. Some pupils need assistance to develop certain learning skills, some have learning disabilities that make it difficult for them to absorb information, slowing down their progress in school, while others may have poor organisational skills that are necessary for them to keep up with their classwork, leading to failure in completing assignments. Some students may even have medical, social, emotional, behavioural and/or family problems that end up impacting their academics. Whatever the reason, tutors with sufficient knowledge of subjects taught in class can teach these students how to work productively.

Students become more self-confident after working with a tutor. Tutors can provide an abundance of learning resources to students who need remedial help, and also to those who want educational improvement. Parents must first know what their child's learning goals should be, from their own observation or their child's teacher. Understand whether their child simply needs help with homework, or requires a more intensive remedy—or something in between. Find out the areas in which their child requires improvement—better scores in one/two subject/s (Chemistry, Algebra, Biology); general ability (Reading, Maths, Science); study techniques; or overall motivation.

Talk to Your Child

Before you start looking for a tutor, discuss it with your child and get their tacit approval. Keep the conversation positive and explain how difficult learning can sometimes become. Try to present a bright picture of how a tutor can help them score better. Most students do not like to fall back in class or struggle. So, if your child becomes aware that there is, indeed, a problem, they are more likely to accept a helping hand.

Consider the Priorities

There is no fixed tutoring method. The type of tutor you choose should depend on your child’s particular needs, setting and convenience. Many parents choose private tutors, while others go for tutorial centres or online services. When you choose a setting—either a small group or one-on-one coaching—look at what will suit your child best. If you choose a group setting, find out the maximum number of students per class, and remember that the ideal teacher/student ratio is 1:5. Ideally, the location should be easily accessible, either close to home or virtual. Studies reveal that frequent coaching sessions produce better results.

While considering the cost, keep in mind that one-on-one tutoring is generally more costly than group sessions, as it is tailored specifically for your child. Home tutoring also tends to be more expensive than travelling to a coaching centre or getting online tuition.

Look for Recommendations

You can start looking for a tutor by asking your child’s teacher and guidance counsellor, or others in their school. Some schools have a list of tutors and make recommendations willingly. You can even check the ads in the local newspaper for suitable tutors.

Asking fellow parents can also be a good idea. However, keep in mind that all children are not alike and keep your child’s specific needs and disposition in mind.

Check Tutor Credentials

Before you make your final decision, you should find out about your selected tutor’s teaching experience in the subject/subjects your child needs help with. The teacher may not have the exact credentials for your child’s level, and it is always good to find an instructor who has completed a teacher’s training program, to make sure that they are trained in effective instructional strategies and remedial methods. Moreover, experience and teaching style are also very important—if possible, find a tutor who has taught children of a similar age and with the same learning issues as your child.

Do not forget to consider the tutor’s personality—whether or not they are patient, cheerful and encouraging enough in their interactions with children.

Show Your Support

You must remember that parents play a vital role in the entire learning process, so look for practical ways to support your child’s academic activities. After each tutoring session, find out what your child is expected to do before the next one—whether he/she should memorise math tables complete certain classroom assignments, and so on.

Conclusion

Following these tips, parents can make an informed decision on an ideal tutor, who will be to help their child succeed in their studies. Observe how their child interacts with the tutor. If possible, be present for at least a part of the first session, to judge the result; children must be comfortable during their tutoring sessions for them to be effective. Frequently seek their child’s feedback and see if their grades gradually improve, to continually ensure that their choice of tutor is a good maṭch for their child.
