The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Thursday revised its assessment scheme for classes 10 and 12 board examinations to be held next year, 2024, by increasing the number of multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and decreasing the weightage for questions with short and long answers, according to the official.
The change, however, may be limited to the 2023-24 academic year, as board exams are expected to be reformed next year with the implementation of the new National Curriculum Framework (NCF).
"The board is initiating changes in the examination and assessment practices for the academic session 2023-24 to align assessment to Competency Focused Education," said Joseph Emanuel, Director, CBSE (Academics), as quoted by news agency PTI.
The board aims to implement competency-focused education, which will include more competency-based questions that test the application of concepts in real-life scenarios.
In Class 10th, 50 per cent of the questions will be competency-based, whether they be multiple choice, source-based integrated questions, case-based questions, or any other variety. In the previous academic session, such questions had a 40 per cent weightage.
The objective questions will now be MCQs with a 20 per cent weightage. The weightage of short-answer and long-answer questions has been cut to 30 per cent from 40 per cent last year.
While 40 per cent of the questions in class 12th will be competency-based, whether in the form of MCQs, source-based integrated questions, case-cased questions, or any other type. In the previous academic session, the weightage for such questions was 30 per cent.
A 20 per cent weightage will be given to multiple-choice questions (MCQs) of the objective type, and a 40 per cent weightage will be given to short- and long-answer questions as compared to 50 per cent last year.
