The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has released guidelines to all affiliated schools regarding assessment and evaluation practices for the academic session 2024-25. Significant modifications have been introduced for annual examinations in classes 11 to 12. For the academic session 2024–25, the CBSE has outlined alterations in the structure of question papers for classes 11 to 12 board examinations.

For classes 9-10, the composition of the question paper remains consistent with the previous academic session. It includes competency-focused questions, comprising MCQs/case-based accounting for 50 per cent, select response type questions (MCQs) for 20 per cent, and constructed response questions for 30 per cent.

In classes 11-12, there's been a modification in the distribution of question types for the academic session 2024-25. The proportion of select response type questions remains constant at 30 per cent. However, there's a shift in Competency-focused questions, encompassing MCQs/case-based questions, source-based integrated questions, or any other type, increasing from 40 per cent in the academic year 2023-24 to 50 per cent. Moreover, the proportion of constructed response questions (Short Answer Questions/Long Answer type Questions, as per the existing pattern) has decreased from 40 per cent to 30 per cent.

"The main emphasis of the Board was to create an educational ecosystem that would move away from rote memorisation and towards learning that is focused on developing the creative, critical, and systems thinking capacities of students to meet the challenges of the 21st century," reads the circular.

These adjustments are in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) of 2020, which prioritises Competency Based Education in schools. The CBSE has been proactively aligning assessments with NEP objectives. This involves creating exemplary resources for both teachers and students, as well as ongoing capacity building initiatives for educators.
