CBSE 3-Language Curriculum: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Thursday introduced major changes in the CBSE secondary school curriculum. Aligning with the national circular and NCFSE's multilingual vision, this framework focuses on enhancing multilingual education among students. The new system will enable students to learn different regional languages native to the country, to promote language literacy.
CBSE’s New Language Rule: What’s R1, R2, & R3 Language Framework?
Under this updated framework, languages are categorized into three levels:
R1 (First Language): Any language offered by CBSE
R2 (Second Language): Should Be Different from R1
R3 (Third Language): Must be different from both R1 and R2
Students must note that at least two of the three languages must be native to India, uplifting linguistic diversity. The same language cannot be studied at more than one level simultaneously.
R3 Language Compulsory From Class 6 Onwards
A key change in the policy is the introduction of the third language (R3) from class 6 onwards, starting from academic session 2026-27. This phased rollout ensures that students gradually adapt to the new structure while maintaining continuity in their studies.
The framework will help students adapt to three language curriculum by the time they reach the secondary classes.
CBSE Language Policy for Classes 9 and 10
Under the revised system, students in Classes 9and 10 have to study three distinct languages. Class 9 students have to pass all three languages for admission to Class 10. Until the fill implementation is complete, the 3-language curriculum will be followed.
Recommended For You
For students currently in Class 7 and above, it remains mandatory to have studied three languages up to Class 8.
How CBSE’s Textbooks & Syllabus Change?
Since textbooks will take time to develop according to this updated rule, the same textbooks will be used for both R1 and R2 levels. The syllabus and school curriculum will evolve and adapt to the new framework.
Furthermore, NCERT will introduce level-specific textbooks for different languages to ensure a smooth transition without disrupting ongoing academic sessions.
