Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy stated that children do not need to attend coaching classes, while speaking at the launch of the 13th edition of Paul Hewitt's book Conceptual Physics in Bengaluru on Tuesday. He emphasised that only students who fail to fully focus on their teachers in class require coaching. Murthy also remarked that relying on coaching to pass exams is not the right approach.
Addressing the question of whether coaching institutes are essential for securing admission to prestigious institutes like IIT and NIT, Murthy said, “Most of the people who go to coaching classes do not listen carefully to their teachers in school. And parents, who are often unable to help their children academically, see coaching centres as the only solution,” as per the media reports.
Murthy emphasised that education should prioritise developing observation, analysis, and hypothesis-testing skills essential for solving real-world problems. He stated, "The goal of education is to learn how to learn." Murthy highlighted that a child’s education should be grounded in understanding and critical thinking rather than relying on rote learning.

Narayana Murthy shared that he and his wife, Sudha Murthy, dedicated three hours each day to teaching their children during Akshata and Rohan Murthy’s school years, fostering a study environment at home. From 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, the family had a strict no-TV rule, focusing only on studies. After a short break, they resumed studying from 9 pm to 11 pm together.
He emphasised that it is the parent's responsibility to create a disciplined environment for their children's studies, noting that parents can't expect children to focus on their studies while they themselves sit and watch movies.
