In a significant move to support students from economically weaker sections (EWS), Delhi Lieutenant Governor (LG) V K Saxena has approved raising the annual income limit for EWS admissions in private schools from Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 5 lakh. This decision allows students whose parents earn up to Rs 5 lakh annually to qualify for admissions under the EWS category.
The announcement followed a Delhi High Court directive on December 5, 2023, instructing the Delhi government to increase the cap from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh. Initially, the Delhi government proposed raising the threshold to Rs 2.5 lakh in October 2023. While approving this proposal, the LG urged Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to reconsider and extend the limit to Rs 5 lakh.

After the High Court noted non-compliance with its earlier directive on November 13, the government revised the cap to Rs 5 lakh and sought the LG’s approval, which was granted on Monday.
As per existing rules, private schools must reserve 25 per cent of their seats for children from EWS, disadvantaged groups (DG), and those with disabilities. Separate admission lists will be released for these categories, ensuring inclusivity and equitable access to education.
