Delhi Schools Closed: Delhi's Education Minister, Atishi, has declared that all schools in the city will be closed today, August 1, following a severe downpour. The decision comes after heavy rainfall on Wednesday evening left many of the capital's streets heavily waterlogged.

"In light of very heavy rainfall today evening and forecast of heavy rainfall tomorrow, all schools - government and private - will remain closed tomorrow," Education Minister Atishi said in a post on X.

The heavy rain on Wednesday evening caused massive waterlogging and severe traffic disruptions, plunging Delhi into chaos. The downpour significantly impacted the city's infrastructure, leaving vehicles stranded on flooded roads. Wednesday night saw heavy traffic congestion and blocked roads, with weather agencies predicting that moderate rains will continue in the national capital on Thursday. The rainfall brought Delhi to a standstill, inundating large areas, choking key stretches with endless traffic, and leaving people stranded as roads turned into rivers.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported the following rainfall measurements for Delhi on Wednesday evening: Safdarjung recorded 79.2 mm between 5:30 pm and 8:30 pm, Mayur Vihar received 119 mm, Delhi University recorded 77.5 mm, Pusa saw 66.5 mm, and the Palam observatory reported 43.7 mm.

The torrential rainfall prompted the weather office to issue its highest 'red' warning. The National Flash Flood Guidance Bulletin also listed Delhi as an "area of concern." Authorities advised residents to stay indoors, secure windows and doors, and avoid unnecessary travel.

Due to inclement weather conditions, at least 10 flights scheduled to land at Delhi airport were diverted—eight to Jaipur and two to Lucknow. Airlines also warned of the potential for further flight disruptions.
