JE News Desk: The Delhi University which already has a North and a South campus is expected to get its new East campus by 2026 and the construction work will start next year. The university announced expansion plans a few years ago which included the construction of East and West campuses as well as a law centre.

DU Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh said that the university has sent a proposal to the central government for funding for the construction of the East Campus. He also said that the university plans to spend Rs 1,718 crore on revamping its infrastructure over the next few years.

"The construction of the East Campus will begin in the next eight months. The process is underway. We have applied for funding with the Government of India," Singh was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

The Vice-Chancellor mentioned that the aim is to develop East Campus on the lines of the North and South campuses. He also said that the campus is expected to get completed by 2026 and the university is planning to start law programmes in the newly constructed campus.

Singh also said that the expansion of the university will provide more opportunities for higher work and will also help in managing administrative work. The new campus will bring opportunities for students hailing from rural areas of Delhi and Haryana. He added that the new campus will come up in Surajmal Vihar.

However, the university currently has no plans for the construction of the West campus. “We are a 100-year-old university; there is a need for us to rejuvenate the infrastructure. To this end, we have started many projects, some of which are in the construction phase. These projects will help us introduce new courses and expand across the city,” the DU Vice Chancellor said.

Singh also said that the university will raise a portion of funds for the construction of a new campus from the Centre and they will remain the rest through a non-profit.
