The Union Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, launched the SWAYAM Plus platform on Tuesday, February 27. This initiative marks the beginning of a new era emphasising employability and programs focused on professional development. It is the outcome of collaboration with prominent industry leaders like L&T, Microsoft, and CISCO.
"SWAYAM Plus" is the name of the platform that the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) will be operating. IIT Madras is one of the original founding universities of Swayam-NPTEL, a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) platform intended for a wide learners. By the end of 2023, the e-learning platform SWAYAM boasted an enrollment base exceeding 72 lakh students, signifying a significant surge from the 31 lakh enrollees recorded in 2017.
Explaining the importance of SWAYAM Plus, Dharmendra Pradhan said that the platform provides “employability, entrepreneurial mode, and job-centric courses, emphasising practical, hands-on learning.” “Our goal is to make education industry-fit, providing learners with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the professional world,” Pradhan said.

In line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which supports multiple entry and exit points, SWAYAM Plus empowers individuals to customise their educational path at their preferred pace. This approach is especially advantageous for working professionals, offering a diverse range of online courses that facilitate a cooperative balance between work duties and academic pursuits.
SWAYAM Plus key features are multilingual content, fostering inclusivity, and drawing a wide-ranging audience. Moreover, it incorporates an AI-powered chatbot to help students in selecting courses tailored to their specific requirements. Furthermore, SWAYAM Plus ensures credit recognition, establishing equivalency for courses provided by industry leaders. This functionality enables students to earn credits concurrently for their degree necessities, providing academic flexibility and practical benefits.
