Budget 2025: As India prepares for the Union Budget 2025, the public eagerly awaits key reforms, especially in the education sector. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is set to deliver her eighth budget speech on February 1, 2025, with important announcements expected for education. While presenting the highly anticipated Union Budget 2025 in Parliament on Saturday, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman emphasised that the Budget's primary focus is to accelerate growth.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated, "In this Budget, the proposed development measures span 10 broad areas, focussing on the poor, youth, farmers and women."
In her budget speech, the Finance Minister said, "For us, a 'Viksit Bharat' means zero poverty, 100% quality education with good schools, access to high-quality, affordable healthcare, a fully skilled workforce with meaningful employment, 70% women in economic activities, and farmers transforming the country into the food basket of the world."
Major Developments In The Education Sector
- A comprehensive, multi-sectoral rural prosperity and resilience program will be launched in collaboration with states to generate abundant opportunities in rural areas through skilling and development initiatives.
- National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management to be established in Bihar
- A total of 50,000 Atal Tinkering Labs will be established over the next 5 years to foster a scientific mindset in young minds.
- The capacity of IITs will be expanded, with the total number of students in 23 IITs having increased by 100 per cent over the past 10 years. Additional infrastructure will be developed in the 5 IITs established after 2014 to accommodate 6,500 more students. Furthermore, hostel and other facilities at IIT Patna will be improved.
- Over the next year, 10,000 additional seats will be created in medical colleges and hospitals, with a target of adding 75,000 seats over the next five years.
- FM Sitharaman announced the launch of the Bharatiya Bhasha Pushtak scheme, which will provide digital versions of Indian language books for schools and higher education.
- The government will extend broadband connectivity to all government secondary schools and primary healthcare centers.
- FM announces 10,000 fellowships for technological research in IITs and IISc, with increased financial support.
- Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the creation of three Centres of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence (AI) dedicated to education, with a total allocation of Rs 500 crore to drive AI-based innovations in the sector.
- FM proposes the removal of Tax Collected at Source (TCS) on remittances for educational purposes, provided these remittances are made from loans taken from specified financial institutions.
