 Vice President Election: The electoral college consists of members of both the Houses of Parliament lower and upper house, with the system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote and the voting in such election is by secret ballot elected the Vice-President of the country. In many of the competitive examinations, people ask what is the election process of the Vice-President is. Article 63 of the Indian Constitution mentions the post of Vice-President.

How the Vice President is elected in India?

There is no direct election for the Vice-President of India however, they are indirectly selected by an Electoral College which includes members of both the houses of the Parliament. The Vice President election process is quite similar to that of the President of India but the electoral college that elects the President is different from the electoral college which is responsible for the election of Vice-President of India.

1. In the election of the Vice President, both elected and nominated members of both the Houses of Parliament participate whereas in the presidential elections, nominated members do not participate in the electoral college.

2. For Vice President’s elections, states have no role to play unlike in President’s elections whereas the state legislative assemblies’ elected members are a part of the electoral college in this process.

Important Note: The principle of election used in Vice President’s elections is ‘Proportional Representation’ by means of a single transferable vote. 

Who can be a Vice President of India?

An individual who is an Indian citizen can qualify for the position of the Vice President if they are 35 years old or more. Another qualification for an individual to run for the vice-presidential elections is to be qualified to be elected as the member of the Rajya Sabha. A person will not be eligible for the Vice-President election if he or she holds any office of profit under the Government of India or a State Government.

An election to fill a vacancy is caused by the expiry of the term of office of Vice-President is completed before the expiry of the term. If there are several reasons such as reasons of death, resignation or removal or otherwise, the election to fill that vacancy is held as soon as possible after the occurrence. The tenure of Vice-President is 5 years from the date he enters office.

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) nomination of the C. P. Radhakrishnan  in this year's Vice-President elections after the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankar, while the Opposition INDIA bloc will nominate Justice (Retd.) B. Sudershan Reddy. The winner will be decided by how many votes they get from members of both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, and that person will become the new Vice-President of India. To win, an individual needs to receive a majority quota, which is more than half of all valid votes.

Vice President Election Date and Venue:

The Vice-Presidential election will be conducted in Parliament House on September 9, 2025. As soon as the polling for the election is over, votes will be counted, and the Returning Officer will announce the results on the same day under the Election Commission's supervision.
