IELTS 2026: On Thursday, IDP Education, the co-owner of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), announced that from September 2026, IELTS will be conducted in computer-based mode, rather than the pen-and-paper format. This transition will provide greater flexibility to students, faster results, and a smoother exam experience, as highlighted by the IDP, Education.
Candidates must note that the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scheduled in August 2026 will be conducted in pen-and-paper mode only. The authorities have allowed candidates to register for the CBT format for the final three IELTS on Paper test dates scheduled for July 25, August 6, and August 22, 2026.
Exam Pattern Will Remain Unchanged
As per IDP Education, the paper pattern will remain the same for the computer-based IELTS. The question format, marking scheme, and difficulty level will remain unchanged for the computer-based version. Digital features such as on-screen timer, communicative interface, and navigation through questions will make the test experience more convenient for candidates.

Two Options Available From September
From September 2026, students can opt for two options for the newly introduced computer-based version.
1. IELTS On Computer: In this, candidates have to complete the reading, writing, and listening sections on the computer. However, the speaking part will be conducted through face-to-face interaction with the certified IELTS examiner. Through the CBT mode, candidates will be able to easily write their answers on screen and edit whenever needed. Easy navigation through questions makes it more convenient.
2. IELTS On Computer (Writing): In this format, candidates will take the reading and listening sections on the computer, while the writing part will be done entirely on paper in offline mode. The speaking will continue to be held face-to-face.
