Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has launched a new certificate course in fashion design. This program will be offered by the IGNOU School of Vocational Education and Training. According to an official statement, the course aims to equip students for employment in the garment industry. Interested and eligible candidates can apply for the certificate program in fashion design at ignou.ac.in.
According to IGNOU, the program is designed to foster a solid understanding of fundamental fashion design principles, an awareness of the global and Indian fashion industry, basic knowledge of textiles, proficiency in digital technology including CAD, understanding and application of pattern-making and sewing techniques, and the enhancement of entrepreneurship and communication skills.
The program is designed to cater to individuals aiming to become entrepreneurs, work as assistant designers in the retail or export industries, or those who wish to refresh their knowledge of pattern-making and sewing, as per the IGNOU.
Students who have finished their Class 12 are eligible to apply. The duration of the certificate course may vary from six months to two years. The medium of instruction will be available in either English or Hindi. As per the official website, the entire program costs Rs 5,000. According to IGNOU, the Government of India (GoI) aims to achieve $300 billion in textile exports by 2024-25 and generate an additional 35 million jobs in the textile sector. IGNOU highlights that meeting this ambitious target cannot rely only on the existing formal training system. It stresses the importance of utilising innovative pedagogical methods, such as blended learning, to deliver programs aligned with industry requirements.
