A total of 6,576 additional seats will be introduced over the next four years across BTech, MTech, and PhD programs.
This year alone, 1,364 seats have been added for the academic session 2025-26, with IIT Jammu witnessing the highest increase of 251 seats. The expansion aligns with market demand, particularly in cutting-edge technology and core engineering fields, aiming to enhance employability and innovation capacity.
Year-wise Seat Expansion Plan:
| Year | Seats Added |
|---|---|
| 2025-26 | 1,364 |
| 2026-27 | 1,738 |
| 2027-28 | 1,767 |
| 2028-29 | 1,707 |
| Total | 6,576 |
The total number of students in these five IITs is expected to rise from 7,111 to 13,687 over the next four years.
Focus on Market-Relevant Courses:
Most of the added seats are in high-demand and job-oriented disciplines like Computer Science, AI, and Data Science. These fields are aligned with the evolving needs of industry and startups.
Faculty and Infrastructure Boost:
Along with seat expansion, 130 new faculty positions will be created. A budget of ₹11,828.79 crore has been allocated for infrastructure, including classrooms, labs, and hostels.
The government aims to foster innovation and entrepreneurship by enhancing research output and strengthening industry-academia links. Five advanced research parks will also be developed.
