IIT Kanpur Placements: Student placements at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) - Kanpur fell by 12% overall during the 2023-24 academic year, with a significant decline in overseas offers compared to the previous year. While the number of Pre-Placement Offers (PPOs) obtained by students increased this year, overall placements, including in some Masters courses, remained low, indicating that, while pupils were offered jobs during internships, hiring declined near the end of the year, according to data provided in a report by the institute.
IIT-Kanpur is one of the first-generation IITs, founded in the 1950s and 1960s. Given the negative trend in student career placements this year, which was caused by a worldwide economic slowdown and large-scale automation, practically all IITs felt the heat. This year, most IITs had a raised placement season that lasted until mid-July, when it usually concludes in May-June.
As per the report's numbers (up to May 31), the overall placement rate this year was 76%, but it increased to 87.9% in the 2022-23 academic session. The institute has a 'One Student, One Job' policy, which indicates that a student may accept only one job offer. The institute's final placement report has yet to be disclosed. Each year, the new academic semester starts in August.
“Out of 1448 registered students, 1096 were placed through the Students’ Placement Office of IIT-K during the academic year 2023-24, encompassing both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. This year, more than 66 companies extended 220 Pre-Placement Offers (PPOs), marking an approximate 6 per cent increase compared to the last year. Also, students received 22 international offers,” the report stated.
“A significant number of graduating students chose to pursue higher studies or entrepreneurship over placements,” it stated further.

The campus recruitment drive for the academic year 2023-24 was carried out in a hybrid format throughout two parts. While phase one started officially on December 1, 2023, and lasted until December 15, phase two began in mid-January 2024.
According to the study, 687 out of 849 enrolled undergraduate students received placements, while 409 out of 599 registered postgraduate students received placements.
When looking at the data by branch, Computer Science Engineering (CSE) ranked first throughout programs, with 87% of students receiving job offers. Similarly, the Biological Sciences and Bio-Engineering department (BSBE) saw only 54% of students placed, compared to 74% the previous year, according to reports.
This year, the number of employment in various MTech courses has been dismally low (until May 31), compared to last year, when some of these programs had 100% placements. Cognitive Science (CGS), a research project, received just 50% this year, compared to 100% in 2022-23. Photonics Science and Engineering (PSE) is another such department, with only 33% of students placed, compared to 67% in the prior academic session.
This year's placement cycle featured significant recruiters such as Google, Microsoft India, Goldman Sachs, Deutsche India, EXL, Futures First, Oracle India, Tata Projects, BPCL, Navi, Qualcomm, Jaguar Land Rover India, Reliance Industries, Prutor, and Texas Instruments, among others.
